Lesson Overview
In this ESL lesson plan, students will learn more about art. Through various interactive activities students will be free to discuss what art means to them. The lesson is video based, but also contains exercises based around expressions, adjectives and idioms!
This lesson provides students with the necessary scaffolding to have an interesting discussion about art. Students will watch a compelling video which presents new, useful vocabulary. Each activity is fun and engaging, introducing students to new concepts while allowing them to express their thoughts.
We have had success using this lesson with creative students, as it allows them to think introspectively about themselves. On the other hand, we have also had some really fun lessons with students who don’t ‘et’ art, as the lesson contains exercises that provide the necessary scaffolding for them to express why they don’t get it!
Activities:
- Warm up.
- Do you get it?
- Video vocabulary.
- Video discussion.
- Adjectives.
- Let’s debate.
- Art expressions.
Homework:
A huge positive of this lesson is that it offers a detailed, useful homework assignment - it could actually be used as a separate lesson! The first two exercises encourage students to use what they have learned in the class in a free form manner. Then, there is an article analysing task which was designed to enable students to improve their reading for detail skills.
Activities:
- Writing task.
- Describing art.
- The Vincent Van Gogh Biography.
