Students love games because they are fun, and teachers do, too, because they are great teaching tools with many psychological benefits.
Who of us does not use simple games like Pictionary, Hangman, or Charades in the classroom? Many of us put a lot of effort into printing, snipping, coloring, drawing, cutting, and crafting until we have finished our scavenger hunt, memory, or typhoon game. As much fun as it is to create wonderful, engaging utility for our students, time is an issue for every educator, and there is a limit to all the hustle. I have reached mine back in 2014.
It was just another day teaching English at a Kindergarten. I had a self-made fruit bingo game with me that I could play with over 30 six-year-olds. The class had so much fun and excitement, that the principal came over from her office to see what this fuss was all about.
It was quite the opposite of what she had expected. She was positively surprised, and I was asked to arrange a game like this for one of the upcoming events at the kindergarten. Eagerly I said yes, knowing little at the time, how many hours I would spend during the upcoming weeks, custom-creating over 200 different bingo cards for that activity.
I did go online to look for software or an app, but none of them could do the job as I pictured it in my mind. So, I did, what I had to do, I hustled. Rewardingly, the event was super fun, the students were engaged, and the idea for teacherbingo.com was born.
Meanwhile, thousands of educators from all over the world have discovered what we call “the fastest, easiest, and most beautiful way to play bingo.” Being able to choose the vocabulary they need, combined with the fact that each word is pictured, has proven to be a great advantage for many teachers. They can now custom-design their game according to any class book, chapter, or topic in detail. Using different grid sizes, the game can be adjusted to many levels of English teaching, from kindergarten up to adult level.
Other features like background/header design, or card size help to optimize the game’s visual appearance even more. All these features are very helpful for those, who already know the game and play it often with their students. But they are equally great at helping new teachers get into the field of playful education.
While sometimes it might be more convenient to use a standard, prepared game, having the ability to customize one’s utility in general, equips the teacher with an additional tool, that can solve problems like
- the number of words (often there’s either too much vocabulary or too little),
- the level of the vocabulary (prepared games seldom fit one’s class level perfectly),
- the playing time (a tailor-made game will ensure you will not run out of time) and
- the teacher’s commitment (playing YOUR OWN GAME is so much more rewarding).
As our vocabulary gallery keeps growing and expanding, more ideas started emerging. We do not want to limit ourselves to a single game, while there are many others out there, waiting to be customizable and made more accessible for the legions of motivated educators:
We are looking forward to surprising you with more customizable classroom games in the future! You might even have a favorite you would wish to be made available! If so, do not hesitate and drop our team a message at [email protected]. The more inquiries we receive concerning a certain game, the more likely it will be on top of our list!
