Lesson Overview
In this C1/C2 ESL lesson plan, students explore the modern travel industry and consider whether travelling has become overrated. They begin by discussing famous destinations and exploring some of the problems associated with modern tourism before analysing why people continue to travel despite overcrowding, tourist traps, environmental concerns, and superficial experiences.
Students develop advanced vocabulary related to the positive and negative sides of travel while completing engaging reading and listening activities. They explore the benefits of cultural exposure, personal growth, broader perspectives, and adventure before reading an article that questions whether modern travel has lost its meaning.
The lesson encourages students to consider what makes travel genuinely meaningful, whether tourism can damage the places people want to experience, and how social media has changed the way we travel. Through debates, personalised discussions, hypothetical questions, and travel-themed activities, students are encouraged to express nuanced opinions and critically examine their own attitudes towards travel.
