Lesson Overview
In this B1 ESL lesson plan, students explore celebrity culture and consider whether famous people should be seen as role models. They begin by discussing celebrities and their influence, sharing their experiences with celebrity culture, and learning useful adjectives to describe positive and negative qualities such as hardworking, responsible, respectful, selfish, inspiring, and aggressive.
Students then read an article arguing that celebrities can be positive role models and listen to an audio presenting the opposite view. They practise reading and listening comprehension while exploring topics such as unrealistic beauty standards, celebrity endorsements, personal responsibility, bad behaviour, and the influence celebrities have on their fans.
The lesson also includes vocabulary activities, discussion questions, debate tasks, and realistic celebrity case studies featuring Jake Paul, Tiger Woods, Taylor Swift, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Students then discuss different situations involving fame, work with celebrity-related pictures, and take part in a range of “Would you rather?” questions.
